Birth of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)

The ITUC was established in Vienna on 1 November 2006, thus ending decades of a divided trade union movement. The establishment of the new confederation coincided with the dissolution of the previous two main remaining world confederations: ICFTU (International Confederation of Free Trade Unions) and the World Confederation of Labour.

Guy Ryder, whom the CICOPA president and general secretary had met in Brussels in June in a very promising meeting, has become general secretary of the new Confederation. The CICOPA secretariat intends to resume contacts with ITUC in the near future.
