CICOPA family keeps on growing: 4 new members have joined in 2017!

As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of CICOPA, the network keeps on growing with a total of 4 members joining in the first semester of 2017. Our representation in the Asia-Pacific regions and in the Americas continues to grow as the organization incorporates new countries: Puerto Rico and India. CICOPA now affiliates 48 members in 32 countries, representing 68,000 enterprises which employ 4 million people. “We are very happy to welcome new realities to our organizations and we are looking forward to meeting the representative of such important movements at the next General Assembly of CICOPA to be held on 15 November in Kuala Lumpur”, says the president of CICOPA, Manuel Mariscal.

21 June 2017

At the beginning of the year, we welcomed the Liga de Cooperativas de Puerto Rico (LIGACOOP) which, under the "General Law of Cooperative Societies of Puerto Rico of 2004”, focusses special attention on cooperatives in industry and services, providing them with a legal framework for their organization, operation and regulation.

Last May, ULCCS, the biggest Labour Contract Cooperative Society in the Kerala State, also joined! The society undertakes civil construction work in infrastructure development in North Kerala region (India) and it is one of the preferred cooperative societies for development of roads, bridges and allied infrastructures. The Society has completed more than 6,000 major projects in the Kerala State by providing direct employment to over 6,000 workers from rural areas. ULCCS represents an opportunity to be present once again in India after 15 years of absence, by playing a special promotional role in the area that could be translated into the establishment of an organization for the promotion of industrial and service cooperatives in the region.

Two new members in Europe from France and Belgium

The French cooperative bank, Crédit Coopératif is, by vocation, the bank of the structures of the social and solidarity economy. Credit coopératif is the first cooperative bank in our network, bringing with it a particular added value, especially regarding the identification of financing forms specific to the cooperative model at the European level. SMart (Société Mutuelle pour artistes) is a Belgian cooperative grouping today 75,000 autonomous workers in Belgium and in 8 other European countries. It provides advice, production support, training, financing, crowdfunding, management, legal and financial tools, etc.

These new arrivals have received a particularly warm welcome from CECOP, the European confederation of cooperatives in industry and services, which affiliates 27 members in 15 European countries. “As it is specifically focused on cooperatives in our sector, Crédit Coopératif is remarkably important for CECOP members”, says the president of CECOP, Giuseppe Guerini. “SMart brings to our network a good example of how cooperatives can respond to the changes in the world of work”, concludes Guerini.
