The Finnish Association for cooperative developers, worker and social cooperatives (Coop Finland) celebrated its tenth anniversary in Helsinki on February 16th. There were about 35 attendees at the seminar, most of them current or former members of Coop Finland, representatives of cooperative or social economy support organisations, as well as some persons from Finnish Universities.
Pekka Pättiniemi, president of Coop Finland, outlined the history of worker cooperatives in Finland in his presentation. Pekka went on to outline the characteristics of establishing of new worker and social cooperatives in the 1990’s, and presented the current trends in new co-ops today.
Bruno Roelants presented a view of current trends in cooperative development in Europe as well as in the rest of the world. He also outlined the role Coop Finland and other development associations have in cooperative development in Europe. Erkki K Kangas presented the Employee Buy Out solution in Business Succession. He started with a series of Business Succession problems which Finland is facing in the next few years, and went on to talk about how Employee Buy Out can solve succession problems and presented a couple of cases of EBO’s among Finnish SME’s. Eliisa Troberg presented the results of the studies on the effect of cooperative model on creativity in the workplace. Her main point being that cooperative business practices can be very supportive for creativity.
The evening reception took place at the Post Office in Helsinki. Most of the current members of Coop Finland attended, many of them had their signature on the founding document of Coop Finland. Pekka Pattiniämi made an opening speech in the name of Coop Finland, followed by Bruno Roelants who congratulated Coopfinland in the name of CECOP. Pellervo (Confederation of Finnish Cooperatives) also presented their congratulations and everybody started to plan for Coop Finland’s 20th Anniversary.
