124 cooperatives recently became operative in various sectors in Cuba. 25 of them are active in the sectors of construction, transport and waste collection. Until recently, cooperative enterprises were active only in the field of agriculture in Cuba.
This new possibility, aiming to foster collective ownership, was welcomed by Alberto Rivera, President of the Cooperative Society of Cuba: "the strengthening of cooperatives as a form of management will be a driving force in the process of modernization of the national economic model".
According to Ruben Toledo Díaz, head of the group in the Permanent Commission for the implementation and development of product chains, "cooperatives have a significant impact on the national economic model".
In July 2012 the National Assemby of Cuba approved the extension of the cooperative formula to more than 200 cooperatives, other than those already established in the agriculture sector.
