In 1931, 82 years ago, 192 workers created the cooperative La Cruz Azul in Portland (Mexico). The company have produced cement since 1890, in the thirties was on the point of going bankrupt. Thanks to their hard work and to their faith in cooperative values, the cooperators saved the company from the effects of the thirties’ crisis. Now La Cruz Azul is a group of 13 cooperative companies, it is a leader in the production and commercialisation of cement and other materials to supply the demands of the construction industry. The group created different sectors of enterprises including education and health service companies, which together contributes to a better life for the local community. Now around 8,000 families depend directly or indirectly on La Cruz Azul. La Cruz Azul activity’s brings economic and social development to the local communities and respects the environment. It has become a very important reality for the development of the entire country, as it spreads its wealth to the regions where it operates.
