CICOPA welcomes the new President of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) elected on November 13 in Antalya (Turkey), during the ICA’s global conference. CICOPA President Manuel Mariscal congratulated her in a personal letter on the day of the CICOPA General Assembly. Monique Leroux is presently chair of the board, president and chief executive officer of Canada’s Desjardins cooperative financial group.
She will serve for the remaining 2 years of Dame Pauline Green’s second four year mandate, the first woman to be elected as the president of the ICA who unfortunately will not be able to complete the final two years of her current term.
As president of the ICA, Monique Leroux, as promised in her program, will focus on 3 priorities: engagement, leadership and growth. She wishes to reinforce member engagement by working together and bringing regions and sectors closer together. In fact inter-cooperation between sectors and countries is one of her main goals. She expressed a strong wish to increase recognition of the cooperative model so that it can become a “part of the solution to the major economic, social and environmental issues of our time”.
There were a total of 742 votes cast, with Monique Leroux receiving 407 votes (55% of the total). Ariel Guarco (Argentina) came second with 205 votes (28%), while Jean-Louis Bancel (France) finished third with 66 votes (9%) and Eudes de Freitas Aquino (Brazil) came fourth with 64 votes (8%).
