The project Youth Economic Empowerment through Cooperatives in Uganda (YEECO) has contributed towards improving the standards of living of young people in Uganda by enhancing their capacity to participate in income generating activities including delivery of social services on a self-help basis, such as construction of their own houses and adult literacy etc..
Aimed at increasing the income of 8,778 youths in ten districts of Uganda and enhancing their capacity to deliver sustainable services through cooperatives, YEECO has been implemented by CICOPA member Uganda Co-operative Alliance. By the end of July 2009, the project had mobilised and organised youths to form 61 functional groups with a sustained membership of 11,887 and had managed to facilitate the creation of 11,737 jobs by engaging in various income generating activities. This exceeded the target of 8,778 by 35%.
